5-Ply vs 7-Ply Fingerboard Decks: Weight, Pop and Feel Compared
Ply count is the number of thin wood layers glued together to make a fingerboard deck. Almost every deck is either five plies or seven plies. Five-ply decks are lighter, snappier and feel faster under your fingers; seven-ply decks are stiffer, heavier and last longer. Neither is better in general — 5-ply is the default because most riders prefer the responsive feel. Choose 7-ply if you're rough on decks, skate mostly transition, or specifically like a solid, planted feel.
Why decks are laminated in the first place
A fingerboard deck could theoretically be cut from a single piece of solid wood. Nobody makes them that way — a solid piece cracks along the grain the first time you pop a trick, because wood is strong across the grain but weak with it.
Laminating multiple thin plies with the grain running in alternating directions makes the finished deck strong in every direction. That is why plywood exists at all scales — it turns wood's natural weakness into a strength through construction.
Ply count is how many of those layers a manufacturer uses. Fewer plies means lighter and more flexible; more plies means heavier and stiffer. The exact number matters less than most spec sheets suggest, but the direction it points in is real.
5-ply — the modern default
A 5-ply deck is what most fingerboard completes and press-your-own kits produce. Five plies of hard maple total roughly 2–2.5mm of deck thickness, which is what modern truck holes and kicks are designed around.
The feel: light, snappy, and responsive to small inputs. When you pop the tail, the deck kicks up quickly because there's less mass to accelerate. Flip tricks land more consistently because the deck's rotational inertia is lower.
The trade-off: 5-ply decks flex more, and repeated hard landings on rails or gaps can eventually crack the outer plies at high-stress points (usually the front truck holes). This is not a fast failure — a well-treated 5-ply deck lasts months to years. But if your style is heavy landings and rough sessions, 7-ply lasts longer.
7-ply — the durability tier
A 7-ply deck adds two more plies to the stack, bringing the finished thickness to roughly 2.8–3.2mm. That extra material makes the deck noticeably heavier under your finger, stiffer through the middle, and more resistant to cracking at stress points.
The feel: planted, solid, and slightly slower. Ollies take fractionally more effort because there's more mass to lift; flip tricks rotate slightly slower and land with a heavier thud rather than a snap.
The trade-off: less lively response and higher weight. Some riders read this as 'more skateboard-like' and prefer it; others find the board feels sluggish. Neither reading is wrong.
The stress-point comparison
Fingerboard decks almost always crack in one of three places: the front truck holes, the tail during pop-heavy tricks, or the concave curve during aggressive flip tricks. Ply count changes how fast this happens.
5-ply decks crack first at the front truck holes when the mounting screws are overtightened or too long, exactly the same place where 7-ply decks crack — but usually later. Ply count is not immunity; it is a delay.
The tail is where the differences show most. A 5-ply deck ridden on rough transition (a homemade quarter-pipe, for example) starts fraying at the tail edge much earlier than a 7-ply deck in the same conditions. On a smooth desk with rare hard landings, both survive equally.
3-ply, 6-ply and unusual counts
You will occasionally see decks marketed as 3-ply (novelty and hobby, mostly toys) or 6-ply (uncommon boutique). Neither is worth seeking out.
3-ply decks are structurally weaker than 5-ply in a way that shows up quickly — they crack easily and don't hold concave well. 6-ply is a mostly cosmetic choice that behaves like a stiff 5-ply.
Stick to 5- or 7-ply from real fingerboard brands. The variance between two manufacturers of the same ply count is often larger than the variance between 5- and 7-ply within one manufacturer.
The honest recommendation
Buy 5-ply as your default. It is what most riders prefer, and the responsive feel is what makes fingerboards fun.
Buy 7-ply if you specifically break decks often at the truck holes, if you skate a lot of transition where landings are heavier, or if you want a slower, more planted feel deliberately.
Owning both is legitimate too. Many riders keep a 5-ply for technical days and a 7-ply for park sessions.

Which ply count should I buy first?+

Does 7-ply crack less than 5-ply?+
It cracks less easily under the same abuse, yes. But both crack in the same places (usually the front truck holes) if you overtighten mounting screws or use screws that are too long. Ply count buys you time, not immunity.
Can I press a 7-ply deck at home with a standard mold?+
Yes, but the increased ply count requires more clamping pressure to hold the shape during curing, and the outer plies are more likely to lift at the kicks. Start with 5-ply for your first few home presses; move to 7-ply once your technique is dialled.
Does ply count affect concave?+
Slightly. A 7-ply deck holds concave more permanently — it springs back less over time. A 5-ply deck may relax slightly through months of skating, especially if pressed at home with less clamping pressure than a factory setup.
Is there a heavier ply count than 7?+
You'll occasionally see 8-ply or 9-ply in bespoke builds, but they are rare and specialist. At fingerboard scale, more than 7 plies mostly just adds weight without meaningful benefit.
