Fingerboard Trucks: a buying guide
Match your truck width to your deck
The most important rule with fingerboard trucks is width matching. A pair of 34mm fingerboard trucks belongs on a 34mm deck; 32mm fingerboard trucks go on a 32mm deck. Trucks narrower than your deck feel twitchy during grinds; trucks that overhang the deck edge catch your fingers at the wrong moment. Always check the deck width before adding trucks to your cart.
Inverted kingpin vs. regular kingpin
On regular kingpin trucks, the bolt head sits outside the hanger where it can snag on ledges and rails. Inverted kingpin (IKP) fingerboard trucks tuck the bolt inside the hanger, removing that catch point entirely. For riders who focus on grinds and slides, IKP trucks make lines cleaner and reduce the bails caused by hardware catching an obstacle.
Single axle trucks
Single axle fingerboard trucks use a one-piece axle rod rather than the two-part construction found on standard trucks. This removes a potential failure point and gives a cleaner grind surface. Both designs perform well at the pro level — the choice is largely personal preference and aesthetic.
Bushings and how they affect turn
The bushings inside your trucks control how the board turns. Lower durometer — 70A — is softer and makes trucks carve freely. Higher durometer at 75A or above stiffens them for faster lines and bigger obstacles. Swapping bushings is cheaper than buying new pro fingerboard trucks and is the first adjustment most riders make when a setup feels wrong.

- Standard kingpin trucks in 34mm are the most beginner-friendly — the widest-produced size, easy to find replacement parts for, and predictable in turn geometry. Once you are comfortable, try IKP designs or different bushing hardnesses to dial in the feel.
- Do fingerboard trucks and wheels have to match?
- The axle diameter determines which wheels fit. Most pro fingerboard trucks and wheels use a standard axle size, so mixing brands is usually straightforward. When buying fingerboard trucks and wheels separately, check that the wheel bore diameter matches the axle.
- How do I know if my fingerboard trucks are too loose or too tight?
- Lean the board on a flat surface and push lightly from one side. Sharp carve from a small push means loose trucks; barely turning means tight. Adjust the kingpin nut first; swap bushings if nut adjustment alone does not give the feel you want.
- Can I use 34mm trucks on a 32mm deck?
- Technically yes, but the trucks will overhang the deck edges, creating an uneven grind surface and making flip tricks feel off. Width matching is the standard recommendation — stick to 32mm fingerboard trucks on a 32mm deck.
